Versions prior to 0.9.6 were experimental. Versions after 0.9.9 began adding more demanding graphical features (like Vulkan backends and higher resolution texture packs) that could choke single-core or low-RAM devices. The 0.9.8 APK sits in a perfect middle ground: stable enough for daily use, yet lightweight enough to run on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 512MB of RAM.
