The film begins with a chilling mystery. Helene Delambre (played by Patricia Owens) is discovered standing over the crushed body of her husband, renowned scientist André Delambre, in the factory he owned. She has killed him with a hydraulic press, crushing his head and arm. She confesses to the murder immediately but refuses to explain why, seemingly driven mad by the act.
