This is the most profound aspect of complex relationships. Many storytellers force a "happy ending" where everyone hugs at the airport. That is dishonest. In reality, the family might forgive (release the emotional debt) but never reconcile (restore the relationship). A powerful ending might see the protagonist choosing to love their family from a distance, breaking the cycle of abuse for their own children while acknowledging the loss of their parents.
