Its direct predecessor, Helvetica Neue, suffered on digital displays due to tight letter spacing ( tracking ) and ambiguous character differentiation (e.g., uppercase 'I' vs. lowercase 'l'). Apple commissioned its in-house design team (under the direction of Matías Duarte and later Antonio Cavedoni) to create a font that retains Helvetica’s neutrality but corrects its legibility failures.
