The film tells the story of four characters struggling with addiction and their downward spirals. Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) and his girlfriend Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly) are young heroin addicts living in New York City. Harry's mother, Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), is a lonely widow who becomes obsessed with a diet pill called "Slenderella," while Harry's friend Tyrone C. Love (Marlon Wayans) gets involved in a scheme to buy and sell large quantities of heroin.
