In the crowded landscape of 2010s sci-fi, Chappie stands as an odd, beautiful bruise. The narrative takes place in a crime-ridden Johannesburg where the police force has been automated by "Scout" robots manufactured by Tetravaal. Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), the engineer responsible for the Scouts, discovers the code for artificial consciousness. Against the orders of his CEO, he steals a damaged robot chassis to test his program. However, he is intercepted by a gang of criminals—Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika—who kidnap him and demand he reprogram the robot to assist in a heist.
